Wainwright's drawings are exceptional. I'd love to know how long he spent on each one. For anyone who hasn't seen them, take a look at his guidebooks because they are works of art in themselves, being completely handwritten. I inherited a couple from my aunt who introduced me to hillwalking, a passion I still have. His mountain illustrations are sufficiently detailed to be able to plan routes. There a BBC documentary on Wainwright here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbzIZuyGa0s
they DO all seem to have the same face, and b) I'm reminded of the Brides of Dracula more than anything else. It's hard going on impossible to fault the technique - but something about the imploring look of the women reminds me of a semi-religious devotion I do not share: I know I'm evil, but I'd like to slip an alligator into the water to see if I couldn't disrupt the scene a touch: lots of screaming, I would hope....
Robert Jones, NAPA on 28/09/2022 11:37:04 It is thought that two models were used.  As for the alligator :) :) :)
It’s interesting Martin how he is so well known yet not as an artist , I assume a lot of people thought that the illustrations were done by someone else. I would think he spent hours on site sketching the scenes and finish then off at home  probably hours on each one , he certainly was a master of the pencil etc.  I must have a better look and see if he did any formal art training as I haven’t as yet seen any reference to  his training in art  . Lucy for us and the walking public that he developed such a interest in the Lake District .
Wainwright's drawings are amazing and I was lucky enough to receive a set of the guidebooks as a wedding present.  I wish I had his energy and he must have devoted hours to each scene. For lovers of lakeland scenery, the Heaton Cooper gallery at Grasmere is an inspiration on what can be achieved in watercolour ..   https://www.heatoncooper.co.uk/pages/original-paintings ...
Paul, I would like you to add a painter from my country to the list. With your permission, I will present him in a future thread, alongside another artist of your choice.
If you let me have the name Lucian I will add it to the list , it will be quite some time before they feature and I will let you know via the thread usually a week before that your choice will be next.  Whilst talking about the next artist next week it will be Terence Clark and John Piper .
I’ve seen the TV programmes on Wainwright’s walks and knew he illustrated his guidebooks, but hadn’t seen any of his sketches.  They are beautifully drawn with such intricate detail.

Wonderfully detailed drawings Jenny. I was aware of his book illustrations having also watched the tv series. I shall look more. I can’t imagine how anyone begins a drawing of such detail!
His work is excellent I have to admit to thinking the artwork was done by a professional artist in his guides, it wasn’t until I was researching for the thread that I became aware that he actually did his own sketches. He went through life hail by the walking fraternity but relatively ignored by the art community. His prints and sketches sell for quite a reasonable price these days at auction. Some more to view the colour page is from a limited edition book each one numbered and signed by Wainwright.

The name of the painter I want to present is Ștefan Luchian. For another future thread I would also like to introduce the American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, as he is one of my favorite modern artists ever. Of course, these would be in different weeks. Thank you.
