Thank you Sandra, I like his detailed work and that he stood his ground and continued to paint in his own way till the end . Will have a closer look at his work online . Enjoy your holiday , hope you get sone superb photos

I really despair of fashions in art, though I suppose we've always suffered them.  It's all exacerbated by clever-clever critics, and one or two  artists with egos bigger than their talent; just enjoy what you can, and if you don't  enjoy it - shut up.  The only questions that occur to me are: is it good - i.e. well painted - does it offer visual satisfaction - and that's about it.  Questions  I do not ask, and don't care about - is it "relevant"; is it "cutting edge"; does it cross the boundary beyond  which some critics see a big profit in endorsing it?   Criticism, in painting, literature, music, is an honourable calling and profession IF  the critic is not just an opinionated  clot with an arts degree from the University of I-was-once-a-polytechnic-until-I-got-airs-and-graces;  it takes only a handful  of inept critics to damn' the whole field - and unfortunately, there are more bad ones than good.   It probably wasn't a good idea for Bloomfield to condemn  all modern art  (if  that's what he did) - a pretence of at least being able to tolerate it might have been more beneficially diplomatic.  Actually, I do enjoy a lot of "modern art", and perhaps he needed to broaden  his mind a bit.  But one gets  older, more conservative, more set: I know I do, so can empathize.  He was a fine painter though, and stuck to his last - as it were; he's due respect for that.

Paul  - Sandra will  be paying a fleeting visit to Cowes, on  the Isle of Wight.   Rather a long way and  an arduous bus ride  or two from where I live, unfortunately, but I'm sure she'll enjoy it.

Robert, the fleeting visit to Cowes will be next May. For this trip I fly to Darwin then board ship to sail round the Kimberley Coast to Broome, then on down the west coast to Freemantle. Sounds like a lot of interesting things to see. I agree with your take on art criticism and visual satisfaction.

You're saving the Isle of Wight up to be the highlight of your next trip, eh?  Very wise.  Pity you won't be staying a bit longer though - if I were equally adventurous, I might hop  down to New Zealand and Australia (sad to report that a cousin of mine, a mere 72, has recently died in Tasmania from complications of a DVT, minimizing the already slender chances of my ever making a visit, because I'd have no one now to put me up on the cheap - yes, I am that self-interested).   I reflect that the longest trip to foreign parts I've ever made consists of a visit from the Isle of Wight to Liverpool - I don't  have the traveller's urges; but you'll have guessed that.  Enjoy your trips, and don't forget  to sketch and paint what you see.
