Rudolf Höckner, 1864 - 1942 - Johannes Holst, dates in Paul's intro, Johann Holst, no date for his life that I can find, but his painting above is undated but somewhere in the region of 1730: quite a gang!
And I've just found two others: one also called Johann, another (who painted dogs principally) Johan - the world is alive with Holsts, or was; the city of Hamburg seems to be a common theme among them. But let's stick with Paul's intended subject, Johannes, because he seems to be by far the best of them.

A I’m out till late evening I thought I would post a few more of Holst’s paintings , this time I’ve concentrated on his seascape . I looked at hundred of marine paintings over the last few months and his depiction of sea and skys stand out from the rest by a long way .

One with a boat it’s one of the painting of the American Cup yacht s , he apparently did a lot of painting of them.

Paul is rightly besotted by this painter - I have a stretch of sea in a painting I'm working on right now: shall we just say it's not as good as Mr Holst's interpretation.... mind you, I'm using acrylic: yes, that MUST be it....... ahem.
Holst caught the movement, without which any sea painting is going to die on you: he also caught its minatory power - rather apt right now, in view of the tragedy that befell those on the yacht that was hit by a tornado, or water-spout, this week. He clearly loved the sea and sensed that power.
