I'm trying out SeaWhite wooden boards for oil painting - bought from Grantham's Art Discount, a favourite supplier (other suppliers are available!).  My last oil painting was on one of them, I primed it with acrylic "gesso" - why do they call it that, when it isn't? - but just used two coats.  I thought for the next one I might use three, because the result was a little more flat than I like.   So I'd just primed a board, with Cryla and System3 priming - and lay it flat on a chair to dry out properly.  Dried perfectly fine.  Snag was, I had red wine with dinner last night ..... didn't notice at the time, but must have spilled a drop or two on my beautiful white surface.  And as any wine-bibber will tell you (Hallo!) red wine is the most difficult substance to get out of anything.  Specialist cleaners will tell you they can get rid of blood, and .... other biological substances, into which we shall not venture; but red wine is, as one of them delicately put it, "a proper bugger to get out". So my board now has four coats of acrylic primer, not just three.  This may be a fortuitous discovery, if it works astonishingly well - we shall see.
But if it works well, Robert, it may be down to the red wine....you may in future have to spill some between coats. I’m being silly and I haven’t even had any red wine.
The way to get red wine out is use white wine! What is stopping you?
Loving the banter!
A) Lack of white wine; I don't drink it.  B) Doesn't actually work!
Only just seen this post ,we are ( some more than others who shall be nameless but he drinks red wine) and having a happy time using unprimed Seawhite boards.. I am looking ,or was ,for 40cmx 40cm cradled panels ,in the past have used both Ampersand and Gaerstaeker ( sorry can’t spell it ) and love them but can’t find for love or money…well possibly money as they seem to have shot up i price, or disappeared from the market. Or you have to buy huge quantities at once. What was your Seawhite like to use Robert once cleaned up? . Anyone else got any suppliers of this size and format? Anyone used commercial panels bought on line ? Yes ,lovely Alan B I could go to the local DIY and ask them to cut some for me but I cant be a***d doing all that gunky sanding etc on the sides, though I don’t mind slapping on the gesso. There seems to be a plethora of other sizes and silly shapes , round !!!!!!!!! . But not my hearts desire 16” x16” .also I don’t want stuck on canvas. Maybe I’m being overly fussy, but I’m sure one of you lovely people can HELP me . Answers here please or on a Post Card.
ARTdiscount have a range of Seawhite cradled panels, not sure about your size though! They are too expensive for me, the amount I get through - I’m sticking to the Belle Arti canvas boards from Jackson’s, a great surface and stuck to 3mm MDF which doesn’t warp and are ready primed.
Thank you Alan I knew you would have an answer.  I willl look at Belle art.  You are right the others are pricey.  How do you find the canvas boards.?   Might give a try.  I’m not adamant I just enjoy gessoed board.
I’m really pleased with these Belle Arti boards Sylvia, I’ve recommended them to Fiona and she has started to use them now.  My size is 40 x 50cm which seems to suit my way of working, I don’t seem to be able to paint on anything smaller. Some will say I can’t paint on anything larger, they’re probably right… I don’t particularly like the canvas stuck to cardboard, they warp! I generally buy a pack of ten which works out cheaper, these last me around two weeks or so when I’m painting regularly, which I’m pleased to say I am doing at present!
I like the Belle Arti boards too. Pretty sure they were from Jacksons. Sylvia, the Balcary Bay painting is on a B. A. They’ve been difficult to get recently, out of stock ( is it down to Brexit? Who knows). At the moment I’ve got W&N but they are on cardboard, certainly ok for messing around but not a patch on the feel of B. Arti. Unfortunately, as with just about everything else, the cardboard backed ones are made in China.
Just ordered the belle arte ones .  Thanks both of you.
Love the B. A. Boards that Alan recommended Sylvia, really lovely to paint on.
