I do all my art in either Pith, Moleskine or Seawhites hardback books. When sketching outside i think a wire bound is easier as it creates its own drawing board. I shop online, but we do have a small stationary shop that has a selection of art materials in our High st. I like to support them when I can. This morning I bought two Pink Pig sketch books for sketching in Starbucks ( my favorite for cafe sketching), and other places. I bought an A5 watercolour specific, and a tiny square one with thickish paper. Light wash only I should think. Has anyone used this company,  and if so to what extend will watercolour be ok. I use pen and ink as well. Any information would be good.

I don't know them - but a thick cartridge paper will take very light watercolour washes; 300 gsm for instance.  It won't be too happy with multiple washes, but that enables you to keep it simple.   I've had a look, and see their sketchbooks tend to be 150 gsm, up to 270 gsm: I doubt that they'd take a lot of wash work: it very much depends on the sizing of the paper - some of the lighter weights will cockle and corrugate, and the really unsuitable ones will lift paper fibres: you'll only find out by trying them.  There's a wide range, I see, at quite reasonable prices.  Watercolour paper is a different matter, 140 gsm being the lightest weight I'd want to work on, 275 to 300 even better.

I’ve not come across these Julie.  The only sketchbooks that I use these days are Stillman & Birn, usually their Delta series. Stitched or spiral bound and in a range of sizes and weight papers that will withstand a watercolour wash…up to a point that is!

Yes I have used Pink Pigs   They are great for sketching and watercolour…and cheap.

Thanks Alan I will make a note of them. I presume Jacksons or Cassart will sell them. My nearest proper art shop is Bath or Bristol which is a long way from here.  I don't soak my paper so should be fine. I like Pith,but they are fine for pen or coloured pencils really. When I've used up my stash I won't re buy as they do buckle.

Robert thank you. The little book i will use as a note book, I can see with your research it's not suitable and I will use my pocket moleskine watercolour book for out and about. Its what Sylvia uses i believe.  The A5 is for watercolour but nowhere does it say the weight of the paper. Seems on a par with the moleskine. I would say its the high end of what you said , so 275 or there abouts. I have a hardback landscape Seawhites and it seems similar to that, so I think it will be fine. I don't want it for best anyway.. Think I was a bit hasty. I've just found a tiny little thing on the back that says  Bockingford 300gsm. So that's better. Still going to look at what Alan has suggested in spiral bound.

Sorry Sylvia,  didn't see your message. Thank you. I've just found a tiny label with even tinier print of Bockingford 300 gsm. So that's fine but good to know you've used them. It was cheap compared to other brands I must say.
