Funny that- I took a picture for framing today (I usually do my own) and the lady in the shop duly laid out various coloured mounts and frames as she was looking at it. So my view was upside down. There was no way I could choose which looked best until she turned it round the right way up for me.

Blimey - what a complicated thread. Can't really understand why anyone would want to copy anything direct ftom the computer in the first place unless it is one of their own photos - is the art of drawing lost? In any event if I wanted to paint a photo I would simply run off a copy - just one copy of a photo wouldn't break the bank. In all seriouseness can anyone explain ? - perhaps I'm missing something.

Reasons to draw from the computer screen : since I suffered a stroke in early 2011 I can't get about like I used to but I have hundreds of negatives I can scan, the stroke has played havoc with my eyesight, with Photoshop I can lay a grid over the image, I can enlarge pieces to make it easier to see and draw, make the screen image the same proportion to my paper size, there are zillions of public domain images on the net, I can get up and leave the thing when I wan't without being a nuiscence to anyone else, I can switch off at night and switch on in the morning the image is still there and I don't have to fight with someone who has taken my viewpoint and I don't have to worry about the light or rain whatever, and I can draw and paint to my heart's content without those irrtatating onlookers and their inane comments. None of this inteferes with the art of drawing.
best,
Mick

I guess we are all different - whilst I do work from my own photos I use them as a starting point - I do a sketch from the photo in outline form only and then paint using only the outline sketch as a reference. I disregard the photo as I find it restricts me in palette choice and causes me to tighten up. I don't use the work of others to copy - only as a source of inspiration so for me the use of the computer isn't on the agenda.
