Ok so what are these rules we are about to break? Restraint and delicacy, according to the introduction, and I'm not about to disagree.
This is a book about making paint work for you, about expressing a thought process rather than an avowedly 'artistic' one.
Shirley's work is all about creating an image rather than a representation.
That doesn't mean you won't instantly recognise the subjects though.
One of the best examples of this is conveniently the front cover: look at the colours, the composition, at how the elements relate to each other, and the subject becomes irrelevant.
Artists are notoriously bad at analysing their own work but Shirley manages here to deconstruct ten of her paintings and explain the intellectual and creative processes behind them. In this way she tells you more about painting than almost anything else I've read.
