Thanks everyone.  I should have explained it's an oil varnish for oils over an oil painting.  I made a stupid mistake applying too thick. Tried to correct but there are areas where the varnish doesn't appear to have taken hold even with me taking a small brush to cover in the gaps, it seems to just get absorbed but I have no idea why.   So, I thought I would remove and start again but the varnish remover I have used (Gamvar) does not appear to be working at all other than a little bit so it would require bottles and hours of painstaking work to remove to start again.   So any extra help would be very useful.   I will post the painting later and although you probably won't be able to see the 'mistakes' I can in real life, irritating!
oops, the varnsh was gamvar!   Gamsol didn't seem to work too well?
Heather,  I have had similar problems with patchy varnish, not just Gamvar.  I’ve not had problems removing Gamvar with Gamsol though.  I once put too much varnish on and it went very patchy and streaky.   I have found Gamvar works very well for me.  The trick is to brush it on so very very sparingly to the point of wondering if you are putting any on at all.  Use several coats like this to achieve the finish you need.  I’ve also found it useful to thoroughly wipe down your painting with a little Gamsol to remove any dust or grease from the surface before you start.  Hope this helps.
Ah, shall try the brush technique, thank you so much Alan
Gamsol ain't a varnish: I'm assuming you knew that.....
