Interesting, your comment about Payne's Grey, since there was a recent exchange about the lovely blueness of Winsor and Newton's as opposed to the blacker qualities of Daler Rowney's..... seems that you would actually prefer the latter; I've never directly compared it with W & N's neutral tint, but will when I can. Hilder was a marvellous draughtsman; he used lamp black (as you say) extensively - I just couldn't begin to get the results he achieved with it. His books, especially the one you mention, must by now have inspired several generations of painters in watercolour.
