Spot the Artist

Spot the Artist

St ives Rotary charity exhibition and sale

September's Spot the Artist Exhibition and Sale in St Ives will include work by 14 artists from the West of England who took part in the prestigious Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy this year. This means that buyers will have a roughly one in 25 chance of buying one of their works for a bargain price of only £40 - but as every postcard-sized entry is sold anonymously and for the same amount, they will have to take an educated guess about the identity of the artist they have chosen. The annual Rotary Club of St Ives challenge now attracts an overnight queue to be first through the door and in one day raised an amazing £8,600 for charities and arts groups last year. Mike Clough, who organises the event that takes place during the St Ives September Festival reports that the club is expecting contributions from 300 generous artists and is confident that this year's work will be at least as good as, if not better than the excellent standard achieved last year. There will be more than 80 artists giving work for the first time alongside professional, up-and-coming and internationally collected regulars. Two Cornwall bases artists whose work was on show at the Summer Exhibition - David Moore of St Ives and Peter Perry of Paul near Penzance, regularly give one or two paintings to Spot the Artist. Last year's beneficiaries included Shelterbox for earthquake relief in Nepal (St Ives Rotary Club has links with Rotary in Nepal) and the St Ives School of Painting for work with young artists. Details of contributing artists and the event can be found on the Club website - Google St Ives Rotary Art Sale. The exhibition will be held at The St Ives School of Painting in Porthmeor Studios on September18 and 19 from 10am to 4pm and the sale will be on September 20 from 9am to 2pm.
