Welcome to the FIFA World Cup Final. Since the beginning only 58 people have scored a goal in a World Cup final – 34 are still alive and kicking today. Photographer Michael Donald came up with the idea of tracking them all down. The result is a unique collection of photographs and interviews. This is their story. The list includes bathroom salesman Dick Nanninga, vintner Paulo Rossi, retired insurance salesman Martin Peters alongside Pele, Gerd Muller, Ronaldo and Iniesta. It does not include Cruyff, Maradona, Beckham,or Messi. This is not some debatable pantheon, you’re either in or you’re out. It’s the most exclusive club in football.
