'Struggles of a painting idiot - portrait workshop'

Went to a portrait drawing workshop last night at Maldon. Armed with charcoal and a very big piece of paper. I should have taken an easel as well but it didn't matter that much. The tutor was Susan Keeble and she took us through the features of the skull bone structure using a plastic skull, and pointed how small the actual features of a face (nose eyes etc) are all so close together. That was very useful to keep remembering whilst I was drawing the model. I love drawing in charcoal it is such an expressive and forgiving medium. You can just dust it off a bit and draw into it with out having to resort to a rubber and your mistakes can become "toning". I haven't done a considered portrait drawing for ages so it was a real challenge. At least my finished picture did look a bit like the long suffering bloke with a rather square head and a difficult nose.
