Pen and Ink

Although I work mainly in watercolour, acrylic and oil I've always been interested in pen and ink drawing and the stunning effects artists can achieve with apparently little more than a series of dots or dashes - sounds like visual morse code the way I've put it. A fine example is the elephant byClaudia Nice in her book 'Sketching your favourite subjects in pen and ink but this book is littered with stunning examples by Claudia and other exponents of the art and well worth a look if you get the opportunity. This inspired me to look for other examples and two books well worth getting if you are interested in this style are 'British Birds' by Thomas Bewick and 'Graphic Worlds of Peter Bruegel the elder' by H Arthur Klein. Now I realise the illustrations of both these artists were created as woodcuts but in print the effect is the same as pen and ink and a fabulous collection of work they both represent. Bewick, an 18th century illustrator, produced exquisite illustrations that are apparently used in newspapers to this day to illustrate 'Country file' type colums. Bruegel's work is wide ranging from ships of war under sail to biblical stories. His imagination was vivd, to some extent on occassion lurid, but both artisits, and these books, are a fine source of inspiration to would be pen and ink artists as well as great books to dip into at leisure for browsing
