Days 1 & 2 at the Cathedral

Yesterday was my second day at Canterbury Cathedral on my work placement. It's incredibly interesting - so much goes on behind the scenes that we don't know about! I've been chipping away at a block of stone, squaring and creating a flat, level surface for the 2nd week now. The first week's attempt wasn't too bad, but the stonemasons strive for perfection in technique, and who am I to argue! I'm discovering muscles I didn't know I had, that's for sure! The image you see here was taken at the end of the day yesterday. There are fossilised shells in the stone, which means that if you happen to chisel one it collapses - hence the collapse on the left hand side! I guess that means you have to take it down further and start again...
