A panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities for the 'mid-career' artist

The Be Smart About Art Academy: Art is your life. Make it your living. Full details via: http://besmartaboutartacademyseptembertaster.eventbrite.com/ On Monday 24th September (6.30-9.00pm) the Be Smart About Art Academy presents a panel discussion where artists and curators will explore the challenges and opportunities available for what is often referred to as the 'mid-career' artist. When many grants and public programmes appear to focus on the 'emerging' artist, how does an artist who is at a later stage in his/her career make the most of the opportunities still available? What strategies work? How does one balance other factors (such as raising a family)? These and other topics will be covered by our panel speakers. We are pleased to collaborate once again for this event with FACK Artists, a forum for visual artists that intends to create a community for artists and a platform for discussion and debate. FACK was set up by Julian Wild in 2009 as The Forum For Artists in Chelsea and Kensington and is now run by Silvina Soria and Julian Wild. “So, how and when does an artist reach his/her 'mid-career' point? What are the challenges but also the opportunities? How to balance what one has achieved with trying new ventures or avenues for professional development?" Be Smart About Art Academy founder Susan Mumford will moderate the session and will share her own insights from her experience as gallerist and artist advisor. This interactive session will also include the following panellists. Clare Burnett - a painter, sculptor and site-specific artist, based in London. She makes pared-down, abstract artworks which encourage people to engage visually and conceptually with the spaces and issues around them. Sandra Higgins - an Independent Art Advisor and Curator with more than 20 years of experience. When she came to the UK in the early 90s she opened her own gallery, ‘Sandra Higgins Fine Art’, in Mayfair. Currently she acts as an advisor/curator for many individual clients, corporations and institutions.
