Margie Haslewood

Biography

I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1954 then moved to Cape Town in 1994 where I followed my passion for creativity. I have dabbled in various media including oils, acrylics, watercolour, inks, pencil, charcoal and ceramics. I love the versatility of the different mediums. I love the challenge that the different mediums presents and try to make time for them. I love exploring the different textures and finishes that can be created. After many sessions with different teachers, trying to learn to paint in their style, I realised that I would only ever be an imitation of someone else art style. Now I paint from my heart. Before I paint, I loosen up with music and expansive arm movements so I can pull in the energy from around me. I observe, then I create an image in my mind of how I want my painting to unfold and this allows me to "see" how it should be when finished. When sculpting, I never have a clear image in my mind of what the finished sculpture will be. There will just be a sense of size and feel of the piece. I pull and push the clay to form shapes and finally "find" my piece coming to life. I recently moved to Surrey in the UK and need to find my art journey here but I certainly bring a rich culture of vibrant colours and noises with me wherever I go.
