Hi, my name is Les Darlow and I am a pastel artist based in Lancashire. I have been painting Live at Galleries, Charity events and every Sunday paint Live at Dobbies Garden Centres and at Hobbycraft stores. This year I am working hard to establish myself as pastel artist and develop business relationships with companies and partners to show how art demonstrations and painting live have universal entertainment and educational value. I have a passion for the Landscape featuring the weather, whether that is a winter storm, a sunrise at -20 degrees in winter, a stunning sunset or a growing supercell in the height of summer, these are the key elements to my painting. I have exhibited in Lancashire and Cumbria and and very often paint live in galleries, shops and public areas. "The hand of God" which is for me my best painting to date was inspired by Hurricane Sandy that hit New York. It depicts both the stunning beauty a storm can bring and the imminent destruction thereafter. I was born in Blackpool, Lancashire in 1961. Although being trained as a technical Illustrator, I have now managed to free myself of the technical preciseness of a photo realistic painting and paint free and expressive, creating paintings that are based on feelings and moods. I can paint a landscape in 20 mins, with maximum time taken of around 2 to 3 hours. My specialist area is Soft Pastels although I paint watercolours, oils and acrylics. Quite often I video my paintings, speed them up and upload them to YouTube. The response from these has been quite phenomenal with over 175,000 views. What i have found in my live painting sessions is that people have stories to tell of certain places. I painted a landscape of Eileen Donan castle in Scotland and everyone who passed had their own little story to tell which i thought was great. Since starting these i have done demonstrations at various Art Societies in Lancashire, which seemed to go down very well and I have been booked back. I have a love of walking in the countryside,climbing, flying and photography. In my search for extreme weather I have been know to set off in the late evening in snowstorms to experience the barren wildness and cold this brings. By experiencing this i feel i can convey this more easily in my work.
