It’s a sunny day and the sky is a deep cobalt blue, as it always is when I remember my childhood. Mum wears a flattering, full skirted Chanel New Look dress which banished the fashion austerity of the post war years. She also wears a smile that dad mentions in a poem he wrote for her when they were courting and he was kept from seeing her by by a bout of malaria, caught when a soldier in North Africa: "that enthralling smile that lights your face".
