I dunno Val I wouldn't beat yourself up about the background, I think it gives it character, movement if you like. sorry I am no expert on acrylic, ive never used it in my life. but I prefer deviation in colour tone, so for me I love it. I would call it one of those "happy accidents" that my art teacher is always going on about.

A lovely painting with the lovely blue of the flash the Kingfisher shows when it zooms past you! :-)

Many thanks for your kind words Deborah and Paul.

A lovely kingfisher Val, those iridescent colours really zing out against the background! It is difficult to get an flat, even colour with acrylic but try using Flow Improver, it does help.

Very jewel like Val, love it.

Beautifully done, Val - love the flamboyant, rich colors against the sombre background. It's very dramatic and striking.

Fantastic little bird Val, full of character! As for the acrylic background, a lot depends what kind of support you are using and what kind of acrylic paint. If you are using watercolour paper or pastel paper, I think that black ink would be the answer. It spreads beautifully and gives a perfect matt result. From the acrylic range I would use soft body Liquitex or even the one that comes in a bottle.

Thank you Christine, Carole, Seok and Satu for your lovely comments. Satu and Christine thank you for the tips. I don't use acrylic very often but I will try Liquitex or even ink next time, and buy some flow improver.

Nearly missed this little beauty, love the colours.

Love how the feathers are done and the blue is very vibrant well done

Another kingfisher for the gallery :) This is pastel on an acrylic background as I ran out of black pastel card. I rarely use acrylic as I've always had trouble with it and this time was no exception. Even after three coats the background was very patchy and I struggled to get an even finish so any tips from you acrylic users out there will be gratefully received. Thanks for looking.
