Portrait in watercolour with a touch of ink

A good portrait for me has atmosphere and ‘some’ likeness to the reference. This has both those Gudrun.

Thank you Michael. I enjoy watching and doing the portrait challenges. What I find oppressive is the striving for everyone to create near identical images. I look at the postings on instagram and the ones that stand out are the ones that have that extra something, life and atmosphere as you say. Thank you for checking out how I have arrived at this particular portrait. I suspect on Instagram no one gets far enough to read what I have written as well! I have been told to do another one as the hair is too think and she is too red.

I like this Gudrun and I recognise her. I watched the video on FB that you mentioned. I agree that a likeness is important but also the artist's unique interpretation is significant for me.

Thank you Diane. I am pleased you appreciate what I try to do.

Archival as always. 31x41cm 300gsm HP paper, watercolour and ink. My contribution to the Portrait Artist of the Week with Samira Ahmed and Geoffrey Harrison. Kate Bryan has posted a very interesting video on the Portrait Artist of the Year facebook to which this is my response. It is also a response to the general question of "What is a portrait?"
