Fiona, you and I must have been working away on similar things today! If you're not happy with the background and it's going to be re-cycled, why not change it? Perhaps mix a complementary with the yellow and the purple, with white added for different tones? I'll post mine, which was using up paint from another painting over an old grey painted base. Tomorrow I'll have another look and tweak!

For a first oil I think you have done remarkably Fiona

Very good. Your things are 'there' and have weight if that makes sense.

Hi Fiona, This is incredible, for a first oil. These objects are so realistic. They definitely have substance. Certainly doesn't look rushed, as you say. Beautiful piece. And thanks for all your positive comments on my drawings. I'm glad I gave you a few laughs! (Wasn't sure if you recieved the comment about the heelan' coo, as it didn't show on my tablet. But I'm glad you did). I'll be having a little break from the site for a while, as I'm putting in some overtime at my work. But I'll be back. Even got another mod theme painting on the go, should remind you of Nessie. Very well done with the oils Fiona. Love it.

Fiona! You did it!! OIL. . . . . you've struck oil!!!!!! This is amazing for your 1st. try. I love it. I think that the knife is super and the bottle with that writing is terrific. I love your colours too! Great.

Extremely well executed piece of art. Love the perspective and proportions. Dont worry about the background.

Yes, snap marjorie! Thank you for your ideas and advice, I do like your approach to backgrounds, keeping them neutral-ish. An idea I might adopt. Thanks again.

Dennis, thank you. Not exactly my first oil, I have used artisan oils before to do a couple of paintings but I much prefer the traditional oils. Thanks Gudrun, I know what you mean....I think!

Hi Ian, yes I got your comment on Heelan Coo thank you and also many thanks for your generous comment regarding this picture. I'm looking forward to more mod pictures, especially if they include more scooters.......don't forget all the mirrors. Lol.

Jennifer, you are very kind, thank you. I feel a bit of a fraud, as I've mentioned above I have done a couple of oils before but with the artisan oils. This new course is using traditional oils, so it's my first one on that count. I think the only parts of it I like are the same as yourself, the writing on the bottle and the knife.

Many thanks Sunil, much appreciated.

What a super result for a first piece, Fiona! Please don't recycle it. It is quite lovely - I agree with Marjorie, refining the background a little will make all the difference to a perfectly good piece. Looking forward to seeing more!

Many thanks for your encouraging comment Seok.

This is really, really good for the first go at a new medium. The wine bottle sparkles with reflected light and the depth of colour in the actual wine is really pleasing. I think you have made an excellent start.

Many thanks Thea, for your support and encouragement. I think I'm in for a few disappointments along the way, if this one is anything to go by!

One good thing with oil is that you can paint on it again and again Fiona! You can add washes to give it depth and layer thicker paint on too! So much that you can do.just put it aside for now and look at it in a months time. I'm sure that you will like it and that you will instinctively know what to add to it, so don't be dis heartened. The objects work very well, just a bit more to do to the background! ( says she who knows not a lot! LOL)

Sarah, you're a gem! I think I'll do just that, gather some ideas and give the background another shot. Thanks for your lovely comment.

Fiona I cannot add any more to the above. I am glad you found the step to oils so rewarding. I did too and now I have found acrylics mainly due to hands and of course age.

At last, paint! Definitely not the weather for one of these. This is the first time I've used traditional oils on canvas and I like the application and consistency very much. Only had a three hour session on this occasion and although I want to keep my style loose-ish, I found I could have done with more time. I ended up rushing the background and just splodged on what paint I had left on my palette. I could go back and correct but I hate going back to paintings. This one will be re-cycled anyway, not keen on it. Old Holland oils: U. marine, L. Yellow, I. yellow, A. crimson, T. white.
