I like etchings very much. I always thought it was quite complicated as you mentioned you don't see very well until it's printed. This show that you are highly skilled.

Exciting I'm sure - turned out really well, Denis

Etchings have always fascinated me, and this is a splendid piece of work.

Totally agree, Ibolya! So much skill and patience here. Wonderful etching.

Has slovenly vintage feel to it.

I do a lot of etching Denis, drypoint mainly, and have a couple of different size presses. This is a great print and it is a wonderful process, I wish more people would give it a go. I wrote a feature some time ago for the e-newsletter, a couple of people did get interested and gave it a go which was encouraging. Looking forward to seeing some more!

Super Denis!

Hi Dennis love the etching is that a bit of aquatint in the foreground? Sorry to pretend like I know what I'm talking about, but I would love to do some , I have not done any for over 25 years. Where do you get your supplies from if I might ask? And what are you printing them on? At Leek art college we had one of those monster presses with an eagle and a snake in cast iron, it was a gorgeous thing to look at but a pig to use.

It's lovely. I would like to try that. Although I can just about get away with a hand roller with my monotypes, I suspect one would need a proper press for an etching.

I haven’t done many etchings. But those I have done have given me great satisfaction. It is a bit of a mysterious process - the drawing scratched on a metal plate in a mirror image of the actual scene . And you have no idea how it will turn out until you peel the print from the press. It’s a bit like a magician producing something from a hat!

About the Artist
Denis Pickles

I’ve been drawing and painting for a long, long time. The first picture I have still in my possession is dated November 1939 and 83 years on I’m still at it! Keen on art at school and would have dearly liked a job with an art connection- I had hoped to get into architecture, but it did not happen.…
