Last hour before Sunset, North Beach, Whitby
You know that feeling when you've had a great day on the coast but it's nearly over? The sun is getting lower, the shadows longer; children are having their last few minutes pottering; there's a vague sea mist developing as the temperature begins to fall? Virtually all that's ahead is the drive home. This is that time. Screened from all the hullabaloo above, this secluded part of North Beach belonged just to the few people who knew it. Cloud forms are lifted with tissues in the usual way from freshly-laid sky washes, laid quickly with a hake, like much of the painting. Specifics like the flotsam on the beach, the figures and the tides edge, are rendered with a well-pointing No. 12 round, synthetic brush by Major Brushes. Fallen rocks at the cliff base are lifted out with a one-stroke.
