The Dance Begins...
I don't usually paint figures as I am not very confident in that area but I was commissioned by our town council to paint this celebration of Flora Day in Helston to present to the mayor of one of the towns we are twinned with in Italy. For those who don't know, Flora Day, May 8th, is Helston's way of welcoming spring where thousands of people flood the town and watch a series of dances throughout the streets, even dancing through the shops! The buildings and shops are decorated with spring flowers and there is a fantastic carnival atmosphere. This acrylic ink painting captures the Midday Dance where couples dance in all their finery accompanied by The Helston Town Band, playing the famous Furry Dance tune! The symbol of the day is Lily of the Valley which the men wear the right way up and the women wear upside down. It's a fantastic day, full of ancient traditions and I hope I've captured some of that joyous atmosphere here...
