I wouldn't mind being stuck in Daphne Todd's rut - if only to get out of my own. Having had to take a long time out from painting, partly from taking on another job, partly through illness, what I seek is inspiration ....... I've not painted for months now, other than for my mother's 93rd birthday card (t'was a piglet; it's often a piglet; mother loves piggies - sigh). Now - how to move on? How to find something new to paint? I have hundreds of photos, thousands of sketches, and still can't find anything to give me the kick up the backside that I need. I daresay celebrities have an easier time, which is perhaps why I hate them so.......
I know what you mean about lacking inspiration Robert. I have struggled over the winter doing odd (some very odd!) paintings from photos and sketches, which I find less than inspiring. My preference is plein air (or even outdoors!) and that has been limited due to cold weather and short days but now that is ending and I can feel the sap rising (metaphorically).
Well I've just watched the latest Home Is Where The Art Is with Nick Bowles. For my money it's the best Art competition on the box. The Artists are allowed to discuss and explain their work and to develop it based on the clients spec. There are no arrogant, pompous art 'professionals' trying to change them or influence them - it is all about the artists and their work. So refreshing and so far I have agreed with the final selection - not something that happens with other shows.
Each time I find that the one I prefer is Lawrence LB's. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I would like to have his skill. I don't know woking in confidence, but perhaps that is how we improve - to continually be self critical. In the life- painting bit, I'm surprised no one opted to paint in grey tones and do blue and pink glazes.
A bit of a disappointing penultimate episode last night in as much as why did they need to drop three people out of only six entrants for the last show? Seems so unfair on people really trying to not at least make the final. My opinion only as ever, but I'm not sure I agree with the judges ( read Daphne's) choices anyway. Why use the public choice then overule it? Lachlan is far and away the fairest (and most generally knowlegable) of them, Daphne showing a marked doggedness in "My way or the highway" yet again. I'm older than she is yet far more malleable to accept modern art changes and the need for progress. I was amazed she couldn't see the merit in good colour and appeal of the Le Bon girl's painting. Both her efforts were good enough to give her a chance. I'm not a lover of the smug, self-satisfied expectation to be in there of Lawrence L.B the magnificent and George is like a Labrador pup with a paint brush, although credit for his progress. Pleased for Jose to make progress enough, but I reckon her previous self portrait rather than last night's attempts got her through. Jane Seymour and Phil took it well although obviously disappointed to be out.. As I said, a disappointing end to a good show. I did a couple of the challenge sketches for fun and stuck them up in the gallery as today's pair. Difficult task the way the cameraman jumped about. Jim.
I'm thinking that the winner will be based not on what happens next week, but possibly on a past week or overall in the series. I hope not, because what's the point of having different challenges each week and a chance to improve if that's the case? If it is, or unless someone produces something truly exceptional, might as well hand L.L.B the trophy now and save the trouble of judging..I really do feel sorry for the three left out.

Don't forget it's Final night tonight; B.B.C.1, 8 -0' clock. Tango Dancers and The British museum are the final challenges apparently. The Tango Dancers are Vincent and Flavia (ex Strictly Come Dancing pros) and are the best. Play the music maestro..😆
Well, I thought Jocey's giraffe was a long way from being a winner, but her bonkers chicken was worth seeing again
I think maybe L.L.B (who is definitely talented) took Daphne's advice a bit too much to heart. What he turned out was a "portrait" of the Natural History museum interior in the style of a tourist attraction advert which didn't really say anything as a painting. . Had he gone his own way I think he would have won hands down. Both George's efforts were not his best and Jocey saved herself with her final effort (the giraffe) . I did enjoy all their efforts and the show was overall an interesting one. Lovely gesture from Jane Seymour to buy the winners painting in the charity auction and then give it to her. That was classy.
Not putting this up on the Gallery, but I did it during the time Vincent and Flavia were on the screen. Had to mentally grab an image and put down what I think I saw. About five or six minutes.

People - I too record as many art programmes as I can and usually watch them in peace early morning . I wish there could be a series of painters viewed " over the shoulder " . I hugely enjoyed the series by dear old Tom Keating which came close to that . And John Myatt , now he is out of prison , showing his real talent . Stephen Weight
Going back to the final of the Celebrities Painting Challenge, I really didn't like the giraffe - It didn't look finished. I was really impressed by LLB's work - speed and accuracy. He painted what he saw as Daphne had instructed. George's was the one that would be a pleasure to hang in your home, but didn't show much skill. However it is good to see more art programmes on the box. The Nick Knowles Programme continues to show interesting artists - much more inspiring than the Painting Challenges. Hopefully it inspires more people to buy or common art.
