Suggested materials

  • My support will be a sanded textured support called ‘Sait P500’. Tim Fisher or Colourfix are great alternatives but realistically any pastel surface with a good tooth can be used. Suggested size 50 x 70 cm for full expression!
  • The paper used will be either black or grey. Clairefontaine Anthracite or Canson Mi-Tientes 'Touch’ 350gsm are suggested options.
  • Hard and soft pastel such as Rembrandt and Unison Colour pastels in relation to the scene. A few brighter highlight pastels such won’t go amiss nor will rich darks (such as Dark 24 from the Unison Colour range for example).
  • Drawing board to fit the support size you want to work on.
  • Tape or bulldog clips to secure your paper to a drawing board.
  • Aerosol fixative (any brand).

Note: Don’t forget to set your easel in an upright position - not flat!
