Monte Toro is the highest landmark in Menorca.  Situated more or less in the middle of the island, it offers vast panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.  At the summit there is a range of monastic buildings, which includes a chapel with large religious oil paintings. Although I was tempted to feature the buildings, I chose instead to show a view of the rugged outer walls and the distant Mediterranean Sea.  Another typical Menorcan feature is the gate, made of sturdy, but rickety-looking wood.

I decided to use Winsor & Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oil Paints.  These have many advantages over conventional oil paints.  As implied, they use no solvents, so they are ideal for painters who may suffer allergic reactions to turps, or who have asthma or other respiratory problems.
