"Beehives in the Orchard

Colour good, composition good, there is a strong sense of light; the perspective on the hives isn't quite right, though - the lines slope upwards, which they wouldn't do unless you were looking down at them; and there is no other indication in the drawing that you are: ie, you'd have to be sitting up in a tree to have got this angle. The foreground trees are slightly lollipop-like - let them grow upwards from the roots, and take the branches out laterally; there was probably really only room for one foreground tree in this painting. Best thing you can do is paint on the spot, which solves so many perspective problems because all you've got to do is draw what's in front of you. But I would recommend a book on perspective,.just to establish basic principles: we've all had to do it- perspective can be very confusing otherwise.

I agree with Roberts comments about perspective......however this painting has a certain charm and I rather like it!

Thanks for your comments Robert. Yes, I can see that the perspective is not right. The sketch which I used as my source was done on the spot and I wonder if I got the perspective right in that drawing. I was fascinated that I could see the bees caught in the bright sunlight. The support is mount-board coated with a greeny-grey pastel ground, and the underpainting was done in watercolours, so it is possible to wipe the painting with a damp cloth and make corrections - I'll see what I can do.
