I know this painting well and what a great result for you Stephen - it really is superb.

Super copy Stephen. This is Teds view and I have painted in this very spot- had to see where it was. The original view is now altered because the harbourmasters cottage has been altered with dormer windows etc. I have an original Steve Hall of this view in my collection. A real watercolour artists must view to paint.

Superb painting, Stephen. I agree with you - it's not as easy as it first appears, but I thought that was just me! Not sure now whether I am brave enough to put some colour on my version of the above or not! We'll see. My brand new tubes of watercolour paints and some rough 350 gsm practice paper arrived from SAA this morning, so I will be trying them out soon.

Excellent copy Stephen! You mentioned the tool of counter change that 'Wesson' was a genius with, and it's that small thing that evades me totally. Also, the way you have laid down your foreground wash, so simply but effective, is another technique that escapes me.

Many thanks everyone for your kind remarks. Fiona, watercolour is mostly a matter of practice and things like washes become easier the more you do them. I think the hardest thing to master is composition, with elements like counter change etc. Again we have keep practicing!

Yes foreground so simple a la Wesson. He painted water the same way.- no b**** silly ripples (excuse his French).

Great watercolour Stephen

Many thanks Petra and Helen for your encouragement.

Fabulous, Stephen! The glowing washes are lovely.

many thanks once again Seok.

This is an excellent painting, Stephen. It has all the qualities to make it work - the tonal contrast, the well placed figures, a good composition and a very competent artist holding the brush! What more could you want.

Thanks Thea for your very kind remarks.

After seeing Lionel's lovely pen and ink drawing of this Wesson Classic, I thought I would have a go in watercolour. At first glance it looks quite easy but when you try copying it you discover it's actually quite clever. Notice how the figures are all counter changed against the tones of the buildings and how well the shadows work, quite educational

About the Artist
Stephen Slater

I am a self taught amateur painter, I mostly paint landscapes in watercolour but I 'dabble' in other mediums from time to time. I really enjoy my art, especially painting outdoors when the weather allows.
