Canal scene at Alrewas by Stephen Slater

Canal scene at Alrewas

You've taken on my least favourite tree to paint - the weeping willow (it's made me weep more than once...). I wonder if you had trouble with it, as I always do? The glassiness of the water is especially well done.

Another beautiful piece, Stephen. Agree with Robert, the reflection is just superb, as are the greens. I would have capitulated at the thought of having to paint a willow!

Another excellent result Stephen, your weeping willow is super!

Thanks once again Robert, Seok and Fiona, I don't think I will try another Willow for a while, certainly not without Geoff's 'words of wisdom'! By the way, Geoff substituted the bridge shown here from another photo ,as the real bridge was a modern, concrete one. I would never have thought of that.

Another great painting

Thanks once again Glennis.

Lovely bridge scene Stephen, nice to see the canal barges upstream from the bridge and the Laburnum tree cascading down over the canal

A lovely palette, Stephen. I think the water is wonderful and your washes are beautiful.
A lovely gallery!

Love this scene, I'd enjoy a walk down that path.

Do you work with a limited palette, and mix your greens yourself?

Thanks for commenting Sue. I painted this at a workshop with Geoff Kersey, so the mixes and well everything are down to him. I do usually mix my greens using, Ultramarine and Prussian/ Pthalo blue, Raw Sienna, Lemon Yellow and sometimes Burnt Sienna and Paynes Grey. Geoff Kersey introduced me to Pthalo Blue and Burnt Sienna mixed together to make a really strong, dark green which I use a lot. I have noticed that professionals take great care in mixing their colours prior to painting. Perhaps that's one of the reasons they are so good?

Love the colours in this Stephen

Many thanks Michael.

Fantastic!

Nice .... the reflections are superb. This is the sort of scene that I like to paint myself..
