Spring Sunshine and Shadows by Stephen Slater

I think that considering you did not do any prior drawing Stephen that this is still a nice composition and watercolour that has worked reasonably well , like some of the tones used on the trees and the foreground shadow cast over the roadway.

From brush to paper this is very good Stephen, you are brave not to have done a little drawing first, once again good greens and shadows.

Thanks for your kind remarks, Graham and Glennis.

Stephen this is a really successful painting and I admire your ability to paint in watercolours without any prior drawing. Very brave - or just a sign of your experience and skill.

I agree with the above comments, Stephen. I am not sure if I could ever do a painting without drawing. Well done!

I dread to think of the mess I'd make of a painting if I didn't draw it all out first so I admire anyone who can and you've made a lovely job of this one. I love the deep shadows in the foreground and the recession of the trees into the background behind the house.

Many thanks everyone for your kind remarks. Jane I think it's more recklessness than 'experience and skill'!

Lovely watercolour Stephen

I always enjoy the way you handle your greens Stephen ( by the way I am getting Stephen's garden withdrawal syndrome!)

Many thanks Petra and Michael, for your comments. I think I must have painted every leaf in the garden Michael but there is a little tree at the front!

No drawing needed, I like this loose look . Wish I could paint with no drawing like this.

Thanks Carole, actually if you work from the distance to the foreground it's not that bad. I suppose It's still drawing but using the brush.

Great watercolour Stephen, especially as you didn't draw it out first. I sometimes do that but not if there are buildings in the picture.

Thanks Fiona, I think thats very wise, I made a mess of the right hand house as the paint ran.

Thanks Kirstie, I wouldn't change anything if I were you, your trees are great.

Excellent stuff, Stephen, well handled, especially those shadows sretching across the lane. Perhaps the chimney shadow could have stopped short of the grass, or moved up the grass? Best. Mick

Many thanks Mick for your comment, yes it would have been better not to have the shadow end right on the edge of the grass.

Stephen, very nice treatment of the house and the way the light sits on it. The path works well as a lead into the focal. Congrats.

fine work

For a change, this is the view at the front of my house. Again, I rather unwisely decided to go in with the watercolour with no prior drawing, (will I never learn). Must try to do a more patient study next time.

I am a self taught amateur painter, I mostly paint landscapes in watercolour but I 'dabble' in other mediums from time to time. I really enjoy my art, especially painting outdoors when the weather allows.
