Love the pinks and blues of the snow and the brilliant blue sky. Just enough colour in the figures to create interest. Over all good effect that jumps off the page. I have just started my first oil painting and hope that one day I will be able to control the medium as you have done here. Well done.

I really like the softness you have achieved Stephen and the sense of light with those shadows on the snow. For me, your oil version wins, even though you may have found it more challenging.

I prefer this one. I think the light is more striking

Thanks Linda and Jane for your kind remarks. I think you will find oil painting will prove easier than you think Linda, if you are practiced with other media. I certainly think the 'learning curve' is steeper than with water colour. At least it stays where you put it and looks much the same when it dries as it did when you painted it! I've been using Artisan, water based oils. The temptation though for us water colourists, is to add too much water!

Many thanks Paul, I have enjoyed viewing your recent work.

Excellent Stephen, your oils are superb!

This is great Stephen - I envy your ability and skill with the medium.

Beautiful painting Stephen

Thanks once again, Fiona, Michael and Petra, for your encouraging comments.

Stephen, this is stunning! I agree with Fiona - your oils are quite special. You've captured the crisp, wintry feel and the composition is flawless.

A beautiful painting Stephen, you can feel the cold.

Many thanks, Seok and Glennis for your positive comments, much appreciated.

Very lovely hazy and harmonious painting. The blue toned shadows on the snow describe the coldness of the day wonderfully well - a painting with oodles of atmosphere..

Thank you Thea, for you very encouraging comments.

I painted this scene from a photo in water colour a few months ago, it's interesting to see how different they are. I found the snow areas harder in oils.
