Chichester Cross by Shirley May

Super work as usual Shirley. Out of interest, do you draw the scene first, eg with charcoal, or just dive in with the paint?

Love that view of Chichester, Shirley!!

Vibrant and loose. Really painterly

Excellent Shirley

Thank you. hi Tessa, I work on the spot, usually straight onto the canvas, primed in a warm umber. But in this case I did a pencil drawing on paper first. If I don’t draw separately, I often draw on the canvas with a dark mixed colour. Limited palette. I am going to try making areas, rather than lines, for the preliminaries.

A great looseness with the brush gives this painting a lovely spontaneous feel to a very good composition.

Lovely loose work Shirley.

This is excellent Shirley, love your explanation of how you did this. Your art improves with each painting.

Started en Plein air a few weeks ago. Three little further sessions on it. Now feel it has the language for what I saw.
