What a colourful bird Shaun. Stands out beautifully against the dark blue background.

Nicely done Shaun.

Beautiful rich colours Shaun -

Delightful Shaun.

Wow what treat to see one in the flesh….fantastic Shaun.

Lucky you - coincidentally, another contributor posted a bee-eater picture the other day - same bird, I expect, seeking fame and fortune.... They are spectacular, and I'd be nervous about painting one, because you could so easily make the bird look impossibly colourful: but neither you nor the other painter fell for that mistake. I'd love to see one of these in the garden - we tend to get rather a lot of jackdaws, magpies, and jays: with the occasional whopping great crow - I love 'em all, but it would make my year, even my decade, if one of these popped by; with the way climate change is going, it's not impossible. I see you use good quality acrylics - you probably know how far these paints have come on in the last 50 to 60 years: the early ones were brash, and subtle as a fireman's bucket ... the best makers produce some gorgeous colours now. By the way (he said: running on again...) take a look at the work of Pratim Das, who used to show here on POL but sadly doesn't any more; it was his ambition to paint every species of bird in the world; I don't know how far he's got, but he certainly painted a lot of them, including a bee-eater or two.

Gorgeous colours and beautifully drawn with your pastels.

Lovely, I do love me a good Bee Eater.

This bird usually hovers high in the sky but this one landed in our garden in Cyprus.

About the Artist
Shaun Byatt

I try to achieve vibrant colours in my paintings. I work intuitively with large flat brushes - I also try not to overwork my pictures and they are often completed in two sittings. I use good quality acrylics because of their excellent pigment content. I like to interpret what i see in front of me…
