Dungeness Sound Mirror - painting planning sketch

Dungeness Sound Mirror concept sketch 2020-11-08

Incidentally I thoroughly recommend (in non-lockdown times, obviously) a visit to the sound mirrors as they are incredibly impressive and no photo or artwork can convey just how stunning and imposing they are in reality - and they are located in a gorgeous nature reserve.

Really super sketch Sarah, yes i agree with you about the sky, sometimes if you have a lot happening in the landscape, its better to have a simple sky. The other bit of advice that can be considered if i may, is to place the centre of interest a bit further away and in its landscape away from the centre of the painting.

Lovely sketch.

Thanks everyone, and thanks David for your constructive comments as always; the distance issue you mention will I think be dealt with in changing the proportions of the painting as per my description (indeed I think you have nailed specifically the reason for my feeling that 'A' paper proportion doesn't suit it), and yes I had noticed that it had ended up too central and I will rectify that.

Glad i could help Sarah.

A concept sketch for a painting of one of the sound mirrors at Dungeness, based on our own photographs from a pre-lockdown visit. I was planning on adding a dramatic cloudy sky, but actually I think it would be better to stick with the glorious clear blue that it actually was on the day. The painting will be in colour, in watercolour. I think also I will make the painting taller, more like the original photo crop - I don't think 'A' paper proportions suit it.
