Like the layers/strata in this painting

Thank you Heather. This became so over-worked that I wanted to paint over again. There must be easier way to paint the canyon!

It's not easy! I visited and painted from the North Rim, but as you look directly into the sun from this aspect then most of the view is in the shadow. At least you've got the sunshine in your picture. I did a series of painting of American landscapes and it was not easy, because you need to get the aerial perspective right. It might be easier to paint using the grisaille method (shades of grey and then glaze over.)
