I watched a programme about Matisse on Saturday evening. There were some beautiful landscapes with really intense light, painted in Corsica and the South of France. So where could I paint on Sunday with sparkling light? The programme reminded me that you can only depict strong sunlight by also painting strong darks. The shadows under Matisse's trees were very important in this respect. Not possible in Harris. I've just finished this. Machair flowers at Seilebost from a plein air watercolour.
