an excellent painting of my favourite subject, well done sir!

So glad I caught this as I'm planning to start a series of longboat paintings, and have been looking at available images on the internet - there really aren't as many paintings of this subject as I might have thought. Another of yours appeared but I particularly like the angle in this one, lovely flowers too a good decision to include them.

Thank you for your kind comments. Leslie, I hope that this helps. Another artist who has painted quite a few long boats (a few miles downstream from my view at Clayworth) is David Curtis. See: http://www.djcurtis.co.uk/DAVIDC~1/david_curtisx.html and http://www.richardhagen.com/curtis2007/2.html (find the ones of Clayworth).

Hello Richard, thank-you so much for your suggestions. I posted my first this afternoon but not too happy yet. I love the work of David Curtis, one of his books is in my library. Will keep trying...

14"x18". This scene is of a stretch of the Chesterfield Canal near Retford, Nottinghamshire, England. It is based on a series of photographs of the canal and the long boat, Mary Jane, is a composite from a number of boats, so does not actually exist. I wanted to capture the reflections in the water on a bright late summer day. To provide contrast, I have added some Himalayan Balsam in the foreground. Although this has beautiful flowers, it is regarded as an invasive weed by the UK Environmental Agency.
