While I've not seen this species for a good many years, I think that's because I'm just not going to places where they can be found: because I certainly saw them in southern England a long while ago. They are beautiful ducks, and you've done them full justice. They have great character, too - as does your work.

It is widespread and common inEurasia, mainly breeding in temperate and wintering in subtropical regions; in winter, it can also be found in the Maghreb. Its scientific name comes from the French name Tadorne for this species. It may originally derive from Celtic roots meaning "pied waterfowl", essentially the same as the English "shelduck". Fossil bones from Dorkovo (Bulgaria) described as Balcanas pliocaenica may actually belong to this species.
