PAKHI DEKHUN PAKHI CHINUN # 391 (Observe the Bird and recognize)...BLACK CRESTED BULBUL ...[From a Photograph of MR. RAJESH PANWAR] ... WATERCOLOUR ...A4...2014... The Black-crested Bulbul (Pycnonotus melanicterus) is a member of the Passerine family of bulbuls. It can be spotted generally in southern Asia, right from India to Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The Black-crested Bulbul is generally about 19 cm (centimeters) in length. As the name suggests, the head of this bulbul is black while the rest of its body is different shades of yellow. Both the male and female are similar in plumage. One can make out a younger bird by its slightly duller coloring. There are a number of bulbuls which used to be clubbed together but now they have been identified as a different species. The black-capped bulbul from Sri Lanka has almost no crest, the ruby-throated bulbul from Sri Lanka is recognized by its deep-red throat and its red eyes while the flame-throated bulbul from the Western Ghats has an orange red throat and white eyes. The Black-crested Bulbul is generally found in forests and dense scrub areas. It feeds on insects and fruits. It builds its nest in a bush and lays two or four eggs.
