The Himalayan Wood Owl[Strix newarensis/nivicolum] is a fairly large owl with no ear-tufts. Some authors name this species the Mountain Wood Owl. 35–40 cm; 375–392 g. Medium-sized, polymorphic Strix with round head, whitish throat. Song consists of two clear, rapid dove-like hoots, “coo-coo”. Little information are there about food habits. Reported to feed on insects (especially beetles), small mammals and small birds. Distribution: Pakistan and Nepal east to China and Taiwan and south to Indochina. Not globally threatened. CITES II. Reported to be fairly common, although no information on global population size or population trends.
