The bay woodpecker (Blythipicus pyrrhotis) is a species of bird in the Picidae family. It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. 30 cm; 126–170 g (pyr­rhotis), 100–102 g (cameroni). Male has dull brown crown, short crest and nape . Diet consists of termites (Isoptera), ants, large larvae of wood-boring beetles, also various other insects; occasional berries. Not globally threatened. Generally uncommon, though locally common in parts of SE Asia; uncommon in China. Perhaps frequently overlooked as a result of its skulking habits.
