A FORGOTTEN ERA OF BENGAL MUSIC.... KAMALA JHARIYA... WATER COLOUR...6 INCH* 8 INCH ...2015... Kamala Jharia was born in Jharia, Bihar in the year 1906. Her father was Jagannath Singha. And so her real surname was “Singha”. Renowned singer K. Mallick went to sing in the court of the king of Jharia. There he discovered immense talent and potential in a teen aged girl Kamala Singha. Mallick advised Kamala to go to Culcutta and contact his master’s voice company. HMV company found they did not know the title of the singer. Kazi Nazrul Islam was the advisor to the company. Kazi Nazrul and Tulsi Lahiri solved the problem of the title. As she was from Jharia, they suggested the name should be Kamala Jharia. Since then Kamala was known by the title only. Kamala could not continue her study for long due to her attraction towards singing. She took lesson from classical singing from Ustad Jameenuddin Khan. For long 20yrs she recorded more than 400 discs in Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi and Punjabi language form HMV, Colombia, Megaphone, Pioneer and other companies. Due to her singing talent she was offered film roles. She made her debut in the film “Jamuna Pulinay” in the role of Bisakha in 1933 directed by Tulsi Lahiri. After that she appeared in many films like “Mantrasakti”, “Sonar Sansar”, “Thikadar”, “Debjani” etc. She was attached as a singer to the Akash Bani Radio. She received a gold disc from a record company in the year 1976. She died in Kolkata on December 20th, 1979.[INFO: CHANDI MUKHERJEE]
