Beautifully done, Val! The texture of the hair and face is absolutely super. Truly a gorgeous piece!

Wow Val! This is absolutely wonderful. The textures, the colours, all done with delicacy and a fine touch, especially the hair of the eye lashes and forelock .

Thank you Seok and Fiona. This is one of the rare paintings that didn't cause me any angst, I just relaxed and went with the flow so to speak and thoroughly enjoyed painting it. Just wish it happened more often LOL

... and it 'flows' beautifully Val, textures are amazing and there's an almost abstract quality to the peice that I really love!

Close up views of any subject really seem to draw the viewer in and give a totally new perspective on things. I am noticing the wonderful textures in the coat and mane, the glint in the eye and I really feel that I am standing right beside this horse giving him a stroke. To convey all that in a painting shows real skill.

This is beautiful Val, love it.

This is beautiful Val, love it.

Val, this is excellent work, such great detail! I think you are a professional artist really and you are hiding it from us! ;o))

The coat of the horse makes me want to stroke it.

Many thanks Debs, Thea, Glennis, Jenny, Carole and Pauline. It's so good to get such positive feedback from artists as accomplished as you all are. Carole, don't make me laugh:) I'm lucky if I make enough to keep myself in materials.

Good work Val,You have managed to make the hair real.

So realistic Val, lovely work and a great title.

beautiful..............agree with above the coat looks so real

Thanks for taking the time to leave such nice comments William, Denise and Ruthy, very much appreciated.

Beautiful.

That you Paul, quite a compliment from someone who paints so beautifully in acrylic, a medium that defeats me everytime I try :)

This is so good, horse lovers everywhere will appreciate the expression in the horses eye and you have great skill with portraying the hair and mane

Hi Val thanks for your kind comments regarding samuel L. jackson very much appreciated especially after looking on your gallery which contains many great works. I think you have captured the horse so well here especially the eye and the way it looks back at you, nice work, cheers Chris.

I usually use soft pastels but for this I got out my rarely used hard pastels and my pastel pencils. I used Mi-Teintes pastel paper, a paper I haven't used before which I got for my life drawing classes.Doesn't take a lot of pastel but is good for drawing on, not too grainy which I like. This is one of the many ponies that roam on the Isle of Rum, Inner Hebrides, from a photo taken by my daughter on her recent holiday there.

About the Artist
Val Kenyon

I am a self taught artist or, as I like to say, I'm "unrestricted by formal teaching" which probably explains my mish mash of styles. I paint in most media, watercolour, gouache, oil, coloured pencil and my favourite, soft pastels. I'm inspired by the Scottish landscape, nature and animals and…
