I love sketchbook work. This is great John, you've caught that desperation to get airborne.

I don't know about learning the medium, looks to me liked you've cracked it. I like Gouache , not as translucent .but it does as it's told. A gem of a study this, great sense of movement and desperation by the bird.

A very eye catching painting John, I love the way you have captured his movement, just perfect!

Love this, a real sense of movement, John. (Interested that you've started to use gouache - I'd planned to buy more gouache - only use white with watercolour at the moment - but its opacity makes it difficult to use with pen and ink, so am not sure.)

A lovely medium Jenny very good for the type of images you do I would think. Watercolour but opaque. Give them a try.
