Super miniature painting. Very nice work.

Thanks Paul!

Amazing detail considering the size! A charming maritime scene. The miniature paintings are a lucrative business here as well.

Thanks Rod - perhaps I should specialise!

Economical, spare painting, I thought - and then I saw the size.... do you find that miniatures sell, he asked innocently? Because if they do, I would dive in - think of the saving in paper and paint.... Seriously, though - are you finding a market at this size? I would like this whatever its size, for its sense of distance, unusual colour, and loose washes.

Hi Robert, Thanks for your comments. To be honest I found a very sweet frame for my recent exhibition and wanted to put something in it! But it was an interesting experiment for me as I have always painted BIG watercolours which suits my loose style. I have never been one for detail and tiny brushes. I use a size 26 Kolinsky brush most of the time and make a point of keeping things big. So in this departure I did downsize my brush but I tend not to deviate in sizes of brush once started, which also explains my bold, consistent style I guess. Is there a market? Well, looking at Rod's comment above, it seems to be the case, certainly in the States. There are miniature painting circles over here in the uK too as I remember only recently reading about it (which would have been either in 'International Artists', 'Artists & Illustrators', or, of course, 'The Painter'. I might add that in terms of value, I rarely attribute size to value as it affects your input not one iota, it only affects your quantities of substrate and medium. I always value my paintings on a completely personal level. In fact I loved this painting so much I didn't want it to go for peanuts or at the same price as a bigger painting (that I was less keen on) however this starnge idea of economics may sit with a customer. Thus I upped the price and it still sold on the first day of the show. Not because of its size, but because, like you say, it's a well-crafted painting ;) Best of luck in your potential miniature adventure - I may do more... petergander.blogspot.com
