Wonderful sky and palette

Thank you Jillie - I had a look at your gallery pictures and noticed the lighthouse picture, same sort of towering construction against a colourful sky. Much easier in acrylic than pastel though! I hope that your thumb repair was effective and that you're working hard at your art (I tried left-handed painting recently and found that I could paint just like Fred Yates!)

Stunning sky Michael! The palette gives the whole painting balance and I like the sharp relief of the darkness of the statue figures against the sky.

Agreed this is a very accomplished acrylic painting Michael, great work on the sky and the statue, everything is so realistic

Thanks Fiona, I did shift the lightest cloud in the photo so that it was behind the statue! Because the scene is predominantly blue, I worked on an orange ground (you can see this in places) and I think that this has lifted the blues and made the painting 'lively'. I have had a browse of your gallery and love your loose watercolours - especially those with trees which have a Seago/Wesson quality!

Thanks Ros, as I replied to Fiona, I think that the underpainting ground of a complementary colour certainly helps. I like your pastels by the way - I always get in a mess with these, very tricky and my efforts always seem to end up looking like mud!

This is wonderful. Amazing colours and light.

Thank you Dawn, I have been looking at and impressed by your 'one-a-day' paintings - this is something that I have thought about but find that I'm always waiting for a fine day!! Speaking of which, I'm now waiting for the storms to abate so that I can get around to studying the cornish cliffs for a palette knife demo/workshop next Wednesday.

Thank you Gudrun, if you use a complementary underpainting in your oils then you will know exactly how it can make all the difference!

Wonderfully strong painting. Great tonal range and super palette. Good luck with the exhibition.

Thank you Thea, I enjoyed looking at your super pen & wash pictures, also your Charles Reid course work which I love but can't seem to be able to do as the brush always wants to dash across the paper when I have a go (not that it looks any better for it!) I'm much safer with the acrylics - covering up my mistakes as I go - but always enjoy having a bash at everything else!

A lovely atmospheric piece, beautifully composed and executed.

Terrific picture that really captures that 'Antartic' feeling Mike. I like the contrast of the snow with the warm colours in the clouds.

Thank you Seok Yam Chew, but I have to congratulate my friend John for the composition as it was from his photograph (with only a little change) that I made the painting - a great photo that made the painting a delightful experience.

Thanks John - and thanks for your talent at capturing superb photos!!

This is painted from a friend's photo that was taken early one morning last winter when it had rained after the snow and the ground then froze over, giving the reflections. I used to live very near to this place and can remember sitting on the chains that went from post to post and having a swing on them but it looks as though someone has nicked them for scrap! It's going into the Plymouth Arts Club's exhibition in April.
