Alan's sketch - my take

Very nice Michael! (emphasis on very)!

Michael I think you've done a terrific job, I do intend having a go but I haven't had time to do any painting for a couple of days. My problem is going to be getting the drawing right

Very nice indeed. Neat clean work. Well done Michael.

Very nice watercolour Michael.

I thought this was another Alan at first; but I've got to agree with you about the clouds - everything else works fine, and you've got his distinctive palette. Alan lifts out his clouds with a brush rather than blotting with tissue - I have great trouble with that, I must say! I wonder what you normally do, and if you did it here? Beautiful, soft reflections beneath the bridge, and the varied colour on the structure itself works extremely well. I don't think I'm going to try this challenge .... I've a nasty feeling I should fail in quite a big way.......

Beautiful result of Alan's challenge you have there, Michael. You and Robert are right about the clouds, but, otherwise it is a real success. Alan should give us more of those challenges....

Thanks everyone Robert- I partially wet the paper just where the clouds are, then apply paint to the different areas - then soften edges with a damp brush - I don't actually lift or blot out - seems to work reasonably well for me.

Like Robert, I, too, thought this was another Alan! This is really good, Michael. Well done!

Thanks Lionel. Robert - not sure about using Alan's palette - I guess we use much the same colours - in this I used ultramarine, light red, raw sienna, burnt sienna, winsor blue, and paynes grey which are my standard colours. I did use a different brand of ultramarine here (Reeves) and didn't get along with it too well - will stick to Winsor and Newton in future

I like this very much .I love this way of watercolouring .every thing about it ,,the simplicity is beautifull .but Michael you know how I like your work .yes,.this is from a lakes painting I did many years ago ,, and it has hung on my staircase wall for forty years or more ,,, some times I get a little worried because .I dont want to over step the line here,, with these little ideas and offend some people

An excellent piece, Michael. And done in such a short time! A lovely result.

Got round to it at last this morning. - thanks for the challenge Alan.Looking at it afresh I don't like the uniformity of the clouds and the colour of the bush just over the bridge rankles a bit but I suppose we are all our own worst enemies. I do like these practice challenges and try to do them without any preparation apart from a few basic outlines on the paper - always a good exercise - time taken about one and a half hours. Alan - where is it? - or is from your imagination?
