Colin Steed - Artist & Tutor. What an improvement Fiona ! This has so much more light than your first attempt. Don't be too hard on yourself, the leaf work and undergorwth texture is quite good. Now you have aquired the technique, with practice you will perfect it. As for lifting off colour. It could be you are using a rag paper. They stain more and so it's more difficult to lift off colour. I used wood pulp paper for this one. Colour lifts off more easily. No using gouache is not cheating but I prefer to leave the white paper myself. Overal a lovely painting.

Fiona Savage has had a second attempt at Colin's project and says: 'I found it a little easier than the first part, though it was not without its difficulties: I think I got the paper too wet and the paint had soaked in too far to lift out for the white strips on the birch trees. I compromised by using white gouache (?cheating). I still haven't got to grips with the single leaf effects for the nearer leaves. Thank you for another enjoyable project.'
