Cottage by Leisure Painter
Colin Benson sent in his version of this month's painting project saying: 'I started by placing a wet-in-wet wash of Cobalt Blue in the top of the sky, followed by a pinkish hue of Alizarin Crimson and finally a yellowish mix of Yellow Ochre and Aureolin to simulate an early morning sky. Then came some mauve distant hills leaving white at the top for snow. This was followed by the farm house, again leaving a little snow on the roof. The main body of the painting was the four trees, keeping them almost in silhouette as the weak sun behind the house would only have just touched the edges of the trunks. Lots of leaf-less branches followed with these generally pointing towards the focal point of the farmhouse. Then the fence (no gate) to lead the viewer towards the house, and some small bushes on the right-hand side. I avoided putting in too much of the bush because I wanted to create as much space as possible to enable me to repeat the sky colours in the field and foreground. Finally, some white gouache here and there such as in the crooks of the branches to finish off this snowy scene. A real challenge! Particularly what to leave out from a busy photo. But once I got my composition from head to paper it became a little easier...but only a little!'
